A half century ago in Mexico the Azteca Horse was developed. The Mexican breeders wanted to produce a breed that will be perfectly suitable for the traditional Mexican horseman and they did it. However, several years later, the Azteca Horse was spread through the United States and a new subtype was founded. These were crossed with American Paint Horse Bloodlines, so the subtype was called American Azteca Horse.

Spanish Andalusian horses were crossbred with American Quarters and Argentinean Criollos. The first Azteca Horse was foaled in 1972 and he was called Casarejo. Mexicans needed a tall horse, so that they could take down a bull, a horse that would be calm for roping, but at the same time agile, quick and strong. Finally in 1982 the Mexican Department of Agriculture granted official registry to the Azteca Horse breed.
